The New Iron Spoonie Blog

There are certain moments in life when an opportunity comes your way to improve on a project or passion in your life, and you have to take it. Recently, one of these moments walked its way into my life, and it energized me to take things to the next level with my advocacy. Where did this lead me?

Well, first, it leads me to a client of mine at work who I know does a fantastic job with website design and helping people just like I take things to the next level like I previously mentioned. A conversation started, and it was clear that improvements to the blog could be made, and branding could be improved as well, so here we’re today.

Welcome to the NEW Iron Spoonie blog. A website I can finally be proud of and a space I can be excited to share more of my story. In the past, I created and worked on my website myself with whatever spare time I had using drag and drop widgets that I could only do so much with.

This new blog will allow me the opportunity to create better content, more content, and hopefully reach more Spoonies with chronic illnesses just like me. My goal, to help them improve their lives in the same way I improved mine. Following the guidance of those who have created success in their own lives, but tailoring it to our lifestyle with the challenges we face as Spoonies.

What are some examples of the lifestyle I’ve created which allowed me to go from bedridden to IRONMAN?

  • Laying out an actionable plan that fits the adversity we face

  • Deciding to make the hard decision to make progress

  • Finding a routine that can be followed on a daily basis

  • Creating habits that make your life easier

  • Figuring out how to incorporate daily activity to improve health

  • Journaling to practice gratitude, meditation, and mental health

  • Most importantly making turtle steps every day, progress not perfection

  • And more that I will share of course

With this, I will be including various tools that I have developed and used myself to guide myself on this journey. The best part is, I know that they can help guide you too. My Chronically Better You Journal will assist you to reach your goals in a variety of ways, striving for progress not perfection. Slowly allowing you to get 1% better each day.

The Chronically Better You Journal will help you:

  • Organize your monthly and daily life

  • Track your health both mentally and physically

  • Practice gratitude every day

  • Eat the frog with the most important tasks each day

  • Reach small milestones every day

  • And more

When you combine all of these thing together, I went from bedridden with a visiting nurse service after a major surgery for 6 months, to completing a 140.6 mile IRONMAN triathlon. If you don’t know what that is, let me break it down for you.

  • Ostomy and proctectomy surgery

  • Followed by complications leaving me with an open wound

  • A visiting nurse service for almost six months

  • Then completing a 140.6 mile triathlon that consists of

    • 1.2 mile open water swim

    • 112 mile bike ride

    • 26.2 mile marathon

  • Allowing me to hear Mike Reilly scream out “Brian. You! Are! An! IRONMAN!”

Think that you might not be able to improve your life? Think that maybe there is no hope and you just have to wait to see when a medication will work right? I’ve had these thoughts too. I’ve lived them day after day, year after year.

I have an answer though, take your life back. Get back whatever control you can at this very moment. And let’s work together to make turtle steps of your own and create a mindset of slow progress and not perfection.
